Modis are currently recruiting on behalf of a Defence company near Stourbridge, West Midlands, for a Material Development Chemist on an initial 12 month contract. As a key supplier to a large UK MoD customer, the successful candidate will have to undergo the security clearance process and be eligible to gain SC level clearance.

Rate: £28-£33 per hour (flexible)
Duration: 12 months initially
Location: near Stourbridge, West Midlands
Start Date: ASAP
Clearance: must be eligible for SC level

The Materials Team is responsible for the research, development and manufacture of materials to meet the demanding requirements found in our motor products. These requirements include physical, chemical, thermal, erosion, mechanical and ballistic properties under extreme conditions of temperature, pressure, vibration and age.

The materials themselves cover a wide range including metals, plastics, polymers and composites. Uniquely, they also include the solid propellant that is used in the motor products. Many of these materials are manufactured on site and especially the solid propellant itself. Others are manufactured off site by their suppliers and require close collaboration.

The successful candidate will work alongside other chemists within the Materials Team as well as engineers within the wider Engineering Team to develop and manufacture high performance motor and related systems for their customers.

Responsibilities:
Specific responsibilities include the following:
*Developing propellants to meet energy, mechanical and ballistic requirements.
*Developing associated insulants, inhibitors and adhesives to be used with propellants.
*Developing associated propellant and material manufacturing processes.
*Qualifying materials for use in accordance with recognised standards.
*Investigating and resolving material and processing problems.
*Monitoring for obsolescence and qualifying replacements.
*Quality assurance of ingredients and finished materials.

Requirements:
Candidates should have a good quality degree, masters or PhD in chemical or materials science subject.
Ideally, candidates should also have a good record in successful delivery of research or product development and some experience of working in a process scale up or manufacturing environment.

Relevant knowledge and experience may include the following:
*Polymer & material chemistry.
*Experience in manufacturing & processing.
*Handling of hazardous materials including flammable solvents and energetics.
*Production process control and improvement techniques, eg SPC, Lean Sigma.
*Safety practices, eg COSHH, MHDS.
*In addition, the following general attributes are required:-
*Interest and aptitude in all aspects of materials and chemistry.
*Ability to communicate and work effectively with other specialists.
*Good interpersonal and team working skills.
*Working to customer requirements and timescales.
*Proficient in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
