Description
Fog Creek is a small, friendly software company in New York City. We specialize in web-based tools for software developers and businesses, and are seeking a focused, energetic, and multi-talented senior designer to take our Developer Tools products to the next level.
Key Responsibilities
This is not your average layouts-and-pixels design job. As the Developer Tools Senior Designer, you will lead the incremental design (r)evolution of one of our two flagship products, FogBugz and Kiln. You will:
Develop an ongoing strategy for bringing greater usability, delight and beauty into these existing products.
Play an integral part in the business’s growth by developing a keen understanding of our customers, product history and business challenges.
Work closely with our development team to prioritize, design, and execute product enhancements and features.
Support development efforts by authoring production-ready front-end code.
Interface regularly with customer support to keep abreast of customer issues and needs. Be a strong advocate for the user. Embody empathy.
Produce a variety of design deliverables to clearly communicate design intent in the best way you deem possible. This may include wireframes, written specifications, interactive prototypes, and pixel-perfect mockups.
Collect, analyze and make use of feedback from a variety of sources, including the development team, customer support, business stakeholders and actual users.
As if all this weren’t enough, you will also play an important part in defining the culture of design within Fog Creek. You will have the opportunity to give company-wide “Tech Talks” to share your expertise, invite design-related speakers of your choosing to give workshops, write articles on the widely followed Fog Creek blog, and anything else you can imagine!
Requirements:
5-10 years of full-time experience designing consumer- or business-facing digital products
Strong knowledge of HTML and CSS; JQuery a plus
Impeccable visual design skills
Proficiency with a graphics editing toolset of your choice
Familiarity with a variety of user feedback and data gathering methods, such as A/B testing, contextual inquiry, user interviews, surveys, and website analytics
Flexibility to adapt in a fast-paced, process-agnostic work environment—and the ability to invent your own process to fit project goals
Ability to wisely balance business, design, and technical constraints
Insatiable curiosity for learning
Excellent command of verbal and written English
Remote allowed
Our Values
Curious about Fog Creek? Here are some things we believe in:
No command-and-control management: You set your own path. Define your own goals. Grow your skills in a way that satisfies you (while still achieving team objectives, of course). Through it all, management is here to support, not dictate.
Treat the customer right: We always do right by our paying customers. For instance, if they aren’t satisfied for any reason, we give them their money back, even if similar companies don’t. This ethic permeates all we do, from customer support to sales to the way we design our products.
Respect the flow: Every creative thinker knows the value of being “in the flow.” At Fog Creek, you will get an office with a door that closes. If you are in the flow and don’t want to be interrupted, we get that, and you won’t be.
We really mean collaboration: Ever had the experience of throwing your designs over “The Wall” and then watching it disintegrate? Fog Creek takes collaboration seriously. You will work one-on-one with hyper-talented developers and escort every last detail of your designs through to release.
If you believe in these things too, we'd love to meet you.
