Shock & Dynamics Engineer- Mounting System Design (Stress)

A Shock & Dynamics Engineer with mounting system design experience is required to work on a twelve month contract (with the possibility of extension) for our Defence client based in Cumbria.

This is a 12 Month contract with a leading UK defence company.

Overview of the Shock & Dynamics Engineer contract role

You will be required to develop and justify shock and mounting system design solutions for the support of submarine internal equipment & systems, typically including: the development of mounting systems and supporting structures to provide shock protection and vibration isolation for equipment & systems; strength assessment of structures, fasteners and materials. Generally this requires working in multi-functional teams to determine the best integrated solution. Specialist roles in the department also involve advanced finite element modelling and analysis and mathematical coding.

Key skills required for the Shock & Dynamics Engineer

  • Undertake mounting system and structural design to provide shock and vibration isolation for Submarine equipment & systems.
  • Perform assessments of support structures, structural seats/foundations, fasteners and welds using a mixture of finite element analysis, in-house software, classical stress calculation techniques and application of standard code formulae.
  • Assess the structural adequacy of simple mechanical items and systems.
  • Articulate and present complex technical arguments clearly, logically and simply.
  • Liaise with industrial partners and to coordinate technical development and research activities, or define/influence design requirements, methods and acceptance criterion.
  • Undertake detailed peer review and checking/verification as directed.
  • Support the shock design function through all stages of the product life cycle, including providing specialist design advice, conducting detailed analysis and providing evidence for acceptance and fitness for purpose.

The role is based in Barrow in Furness, Cumbria - commutable from Carnforth, Milnthorpe, Lancaster, Morecambe, Penrith, Workington, Whitehaven and The Lake District.
