SPATIAL DATA SPECIALIST - EDINBURGH - 3 months

Our Edinburgh based client has an urgent requirement for an experienced Spatial Data Specialist for an initial 3 month contract.

The Spatial Data Technical Specialist is responsible for advising, designing, following and monitoring processes that ensure the integrity and auditability of the data sets. Some of the work is in response to data or service requests from people requiring specific spatial data sets.

Both ArcGIS and Geoserver are run in-house, and the team uses FME and Snowflake GoLoader extensively. Among the backdrop data sets managed are Ordnance Survey (OS) MasterMap, OS AddressBase and aerial photography.

The specific responsibilities are:

  • Design, refine, follow and monitor procedures for transforming, storing, cataloguing and distributing data, and for correcting data integrity and quality.
  • Use a variety of specialist geospatial software to achieve the above tasks
  • Monitor the performance of the above tasks, and solve and repair issues when appropriate
  • Configure and monitor the use of specialist geospatial software

The job involves working closely with technical professionals including database administrators, system administrators, solution architects and spatial data experts.

Essential Skills

  • Solid knowledge and experience of spatial data concepts and tools
  • Hands-on experience of manipulating and managing geospatial data
  • Knowledge and experience of metadata concepts and use
  • Responsibility for data integrity and quality
  • Excellent awareness of the architecture of software applications and services
  • Hands-on experience of programmatic database access and manipulation
  • Experience of recording the results of data-intensive computer operations

Hands-on experience of spatial management tools, such as:

  • ESRI ArcGIS software suite
  • Snowflake GoLoader
  • SuperpOSe
  • QGIS
  • FME
  • SQL manipulation
  • Experience of second or third line IT support
  • Knowledge of agricultural schemes and legislation
  • Knowledge of INSPIRE
  • Hands-on exposure to Unix
  • Command line manipulation of software tools
