Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Core Design and Manufacture department on a contract basis for a stress engineer to join the team to work on structural integrity issues for current-class submarines, next generation reactor core designs and research and technology projects.

Core stress engineers carry out analyses of all core components within the reactor pressure vessel using a combination of traditional hand calculations, advanced finite element methods, in-house software and industry-wide tools like ABAQUS and codes (such as ASME and R6). The methods and results of such analyses are then written up to support the development of a Reactor Plant Safety Justification. This requires engineers to be capable of writing and presenting detailed technical discussion documents as well as performing the analyses.

If successful in your application, you will be expected to plan and undertake large analysis projects supporting an iterative design process. You will have to present your work to technical and business reviews and provide input to key design decisions.

You will also be expected to be able to provide support to, and liaise with, manufacturing engineers as required.

Qualified to degree level or equivalent in mechanical engineering or a related discipline, you will have practical experience of the finite element method and will have conducted analyses and assessments of structural components in a previous role. You will be familiar with the ABAQUS finite element analysis software package and will have used it for the design, analysis and post-processing of models.

A good understanding of the behaviour of metallic materials in a high-pressure, high-temperature environment, fatigue assessment, probabilistic fracture mechanics, residual stress modelling, creep, programming (for example Python or Fortran) is required.

As you'll be working as part of a team, strong interpersonal and communication abilities including literacy skills are essential. You will possess problem solving skills plus a creative yet methodical approach.
