They also maintain and update these systems as newer technology becomes available. 

Additionally, they are also responsible for the documentation of telecom plans, inquiries, activities, and specifications as well as reporting on them.

Telecom Consultants can work on a wide variety of projects – small or complex, from the installation and maintenance of email systems, database networks, wireless systems, to even the ability to transmit data via satellite. 

Daily tasks of a Telecom Consultant:

  • Management, supervision, and providing technical advice on telecommunications systems
  • Receive feedback, identify user needs and requirements, and mobilize existing technology to meet their criteria
  • Documentation of plans, inquiries, activities, and specifications as well as reporting on them
  • Programming functions, designing networks and systems and allocating resources as required
  • Manage the installation of network infrastructure equipment including switches, routers, wireless, and security appliances at client sites
  • Monitor and test systems and peripherals, and troubleshoot problems
  • Evaluate system performance levels and improve skills as needed
  • Supervision and coordination of telecommunications activities
  • Purchase of electronic equipment and preparation of budget justifications
  • Expense management for ongoing telecom expenses
  • Cooperation with the management to further develop the staff and improve their skills

In order to successfully work with communication systems and devices, a successful candidate is familiar with telephone and data cables, lines, circuits, digital computers, and all associated systems and devices

In essence, they are technologically savvy and enjoy staying up to date on the latest advances in IT and technology. 

Since a Telecom Consultant works with teams to help determine appropriate requirements, the role requires exceptional personal communication skills and, perhaps more importantly, excellent listening skills. Project management is another talent that a successful Telecom Consultant should have.

Furthermore, they may also be in charge of internal support staff or have to manage external providers in the implementation of systems. This requires the ability to effectively manage and monitor employees. 

Skills required: 

  • Practical experience with all telecommunications systems, including peripheral devices (e.g. computer networks, fiber optics, on-site controls, data modems, connections, etc.)
  •  Working knowledge in telecommunications, cable/conduit routing, equipment rack layouts, floor plans, and datacenter projects strongly preferred.
  • Virtualization & SAN experience
  • Knowledge of Autodesk Revit and the ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs
  • Experience with network infrastructure technologies – i.e. Cisco
  • Experience in planning and knowledge of ArcGIS or QGIS
  • Familiarity with MS Office and databases
  • Adequate interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Project management and problem-solving skills
  • Team player with customer service orientation
  • Ability to provide hands-on technical support
